Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia. It is the biggest town in Croatia with near 1 million people. Historically speaking, it arose by merging two communities, Gradec and Kaptol, which now form Zagreb’s Old Town. Zagreb is located in continental part of Croatia, on southern slopes of Medvednica and on the banks of the river Sava. Since Zagreb is in the middle of Pannonian plain, it is a traffic hub which connects Middle and East Europe.

Zagreb is the centre of political, economic and cultural power of Croatia, it have the best educational institutions in Croatia, most major companies have the seat in Zagreb.

The Old Town is the most important touristic attraction of Zagreb since it posseses an extremely valuable cultural heritage. One of the most distinctive monuments is Zagreb’s Cathedral, dedicated to Virgin Mary. Cathedral was being built from 12th to 18th century so it has the elements of Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic, which makes it so special.

Another monument is the church of St.Mark, which is characterized by a roof inspired by the elements of flag of Croatia and flag of Zagreb. Many galleries and significant sculptures are located in the Old Town, as well as Croatian parlament and government.

In the center of town there is the main square, Ban Jelacic square, which is a meeting point for many Croats. Also, it is the place where people gather while celebrating something, for example Olympic medal or New Year’s Eve. Croatia’s National Theatre is a prestigious neobaroque buliding made in the end of 19th century, which host many drama plays, operas and ballets.

Architecture of Zagreb is mostly similar to Wiennese, because Croatia has been a part of the Austro-Ugarian monarchy for a long period of time.
New Zagreb has emerged as a result of population growth.

Zagreb is also centre of Croatian sport. After it was built for the purpose of World Handball Championship ‘09, the new arena in Zagreb became one of its symbols.
